Ordering or hiring a Cornish kilt outfit is exciting, but getting the measurements right is one of the most important parts of making sure your outfit fits comfortably and looks smart on the day.
At Cornish Kilts, we always recommend being measured in store where possible. However, if you are unable to visit us straight away, a self-measure guide can help us get the details we need to prepare your outfit.
You will need a soft tape measure and, ideally, someone to help you. Some measurements are simple to take yourself, but others — especially the kilt drop — are much more accurate when taken by another person.
Please give all measurements in inches.

What Measurements Do You Need for a Cornish Kilt Outfit?
There are seven main measurements needed for a kilt outfit:
Height
Collar
Crown to Cuff
Chest
Natural Waist / Belly
Kilt Drop
Shoe Size
These measurements help us work out the correct sizes for your kilt, jacket, waistcoat, shirt and shoes.
1. Height
Your height should be given in feet and inches.
This helps us check the overall proportions of your outfit and can be useful when confirming jacket length, kilt drop and general sizing.
Tip: Stand straight against a wall without shoes for the most accurate measurement.

2. Collar Measurement
The collar measurement is used for your shirt size.
Place the tape measure around the neck where a shirt collar would sit. Make sure it is not too tight. You should be able to fit one finger comfortably between the tape and the neck.
This allows enough breathing room and helps avoid the shirt feeling too restrictive.

3. Crown to Cuff
The crown-to-cuff measurement helps determine sleeve length.
With the arm hanging naturally by the side, measure from the tip of the shoulder down to where you would like the cuff to finish. This is usually just above the thumb joint.
Try not to bend the arm or lift the shoulder while taking this measurement.

4. Chest Measurement
Measure around the broadest part of the chest, underneath the arms.
Keep the tape measure level all the way around the body. It should sit firmly but not be pulled tight.
This measurement helps us choose the correct jacket and waistcoat size.

5. Natural Waist / Belly Measurement
For a kilt, the waist measurement is taken around the stomach in line with the belly button.
This is where the kilt is designed to be worn, which is higher than where many people wear jeans or trousers.
Breathe out fully and slightly tighten the tape measure. This helps ensure the kilt will sit securely and not slip down once properly fastened.
This is one of the most important measurements, so take your time with it.

6. Kilt Drop
The kilt drop is the length of the kilt.
Start in line with the belly button and measure down to the middle of the knee.
It is best to have someone else take this measurement for you, as you need to stand up straight and avoid bending forward to look at the tape.
The correct kilt drop helps the kilt sit at the right length and gives the outfit a smart, balanced look.

7. Shoe Size
Please give your usual shoe size.
It is best to use the size you would normally wear for smart shoes, brogues or formal footwear rather than trainers, as sizing can sometimes vary between styles.

Helpful Measuring Tips
Use a soft tape measure rather than a metal DIY tape.
Ask someone to help, especially with the kilt drop and crown to cuff.
Stand naturally and avoid holding your breath.
Do not measure over bulky clothing.
Double-check the waist and kilt drop measurements before sending them to us.
Send all measurements in inches.
In-Store Measuring Is Always Recommended
Self-measuring is useful if you cannot visit us straight away, but we always recommend being professionally measured in-store where possible.
A kilt outfit needs to sit correctly and comfortably, especially if it is being worn for a wedding, prom, formal event or special occasion.
If you are local to Callington, Cornwall, you are very welcome to visit us so we can help check your sizing and talk through your outfit options.
